Where's the Downloadable Plans?
You do the best videos just like they said 9years ago. I’m just getting started bee keeping at 75 with double deep traps and hives and been learning tons of skills from your videos. I adapt for the different size equipment…. BUT YOUR SKILLS & CARPENTER TRICKS ARE PICELESS!! If you come to Texas look me up I’m in Boyd. Thanks for posting all your work.
I made a couple hundred frames based on this video. Couple things. - Regarding the tack strip - I noticed that if I used a thin kerf blade to make the cut out for the tack strip, the waste piece was sufficient to be the tack strip thereby eliminating the need to make one. Also regarding the drill bit and combination square measuring method for cutting narrow strips. It certainly has it's appeal. I have used this method on many occasions when making up to a handful of pieces. However when making hundreds.....having to stop and adjust the fence for every cut takes a lot of time. So I made a fairly wide sacrificial push stick. The saw blade does cut into the heel of the push stick but so what. Now one can have the narrow piece of interest between the blade and the fence, but the push stick pushes it on through. If you set up a cardboard box on the floor on the far side of the table to catch them, one can just push the narrow stips off the end of the table. No kickback and no reaching over the blade for your work piece. Regarding the foundation wire holes in the side bar - Since I was making 200 of these, that's 400 side bars =1200 holes. So I made a little jig that I clamped to the drill press table so I didn't have to measure or mark for the holes.
Thanks very much.Ftom Kenya
Sir your explanations and instructions are awesome. Thank you.
You are great teacher, you instructions are very well explained. Thank you for your help as I wish to get my first hive this year 2024 in July. Thanks again regards Richard Weir from down under in Aus
Good scripting. Could easily use someone without a speech impediment so it's not so distracting and difficult to listen to. Or take training to correct the Elmer Fudd syndrome.
Thank you so much!
I have added a piece of foam board over the plywood top and increased the metal top size to cover it. I want the extra insulation from heat and cold.
Good idea
8 years later and still being helpful to many of us without lots of specialized tools. Thank you!
👍
If you have a planer then your first step is planing your 2x6 down to the finished thickness. You get 160 side bars out of one 2x6x8 so you just saved yourself 160 cuts by planing.
Hello
Hi, inner length is 18 3/8. how did you come up with 19 7/8?
Assuming side boards are 3/4 inch each. That makes the outside footprint size 18 3/8 plus 1-1/2 (3/4 for two end boards) equals 19 7/8.
Too bad so few people have a radial saw!
I’ve watched at least a dozen different RUclipsrs build various hive parts but this is the only one who seems to have made a complete set of videos to make all parts of the hive and on top of that it’s the best produced video series and uses the best techniques. Don’t know how it took me so long to find this RUclips channel but glad I did before starting my hive building in earnest. Just in time because I’m just finishing putting together my own beekeepers workshop here in CT. Thank you so much.
Any books I can download for notes
Do you have any books I can download?
It's after following your videos that brought my interest in beekeeping,I made my own bee hive as you always suggest in your videos, thankyou for your videos
is there any plans?
Thank you for making such a simple, straightforward, easy to follow video! Would adding extra wire ties be secure enough without soldering? We don't have the right equipment yet.
Certainly worth a try. You might also try a small dab of glue (such as super glue).
😅😊
I’ve been using your videos since making my first hive. Just finished my fifth. Awesome instructions. Are you still into beekeeping?
Yes. I particularly like working with the mini-nucs. Do it every spring.
I watch each step of your videos when making frames, etc. Without them, I’d be lost.
Thank you for the great teaching.
Just subscribed, you mention there are downloadable plans to go with your video i cant find a link to buy them
How do we contact you if we wish to purchase written plans from you? Thank you!
Do all the measurements really need to be that exact? The hives are for honey bees, not carpenter bees. That being said, great job.
In a word... yes. All the rest of the hive components have some room for measurement errors. The frames are different in this respect. It is far easier to have the frames be built to spec than struggle later when things don't fit right. That is why we give some tips on how to set up your saw down to a 32nd of an inch. Take your time. Measure twice and you won't be dissapointed in the results.
@@beekeepersworkshop That was supposed to be funny, but I guess the joke was on me, Sorry
This video serie is excellent .. and it makes so much sense to have smaller spaces to give them a good start ... thank you ... and how do you keep your shop so clean and tidy ?? :):)
As for the tidiness of the shop... Most of the ti e it isn't and is a complete pit!
What a great design... keeping in mind the physics of the operation at hand... thanks, again...
Thank you , Ir is easy to anderstand you !
I am going to make this. Thank you for all of your videos in this channel.
I like your ideas in your wood working but for cutting your top notch in the side bars . It looked like there was A LOT of in needed measuring an cutting that was not needed . You had to many measurements changes an steps WHY not just take your 2”x 6”x ?’ Long board an run it thru a plain to get your correct size . Then put a stack set blades in your saw an do ONE CUT . Then while you have your stack blade set on you can cut your bevel or your bottom part of your side bar . To make those cuts all is needed is to just lower your blade an then you can start cutting each of your side bars an no ban saw is needed . Just a thought. Thanks
There are many different ways to work with wood. That is one reason why it is so satisfying. I didn't use a plane because it is not that common of a tool in a hobbyist's workshop. And I don't have one. If you can see a different way to the end results then go for it.
Wow, What a Good teacher! . Thank you Sir.
What is that yellow plate in the example frame? Why you don't assembly that thing to the new frame?
That "yellow plate" is a sheet of wax foundation. The foundation is installed into the frame after the frame is finished and all the glue joints have dried. I show how to install wax foundation in Part 2 of our channel's "Mini-Nuc" series. I usually install was foundation just prior to using the frame. That way it won't get broken while storing the frame.
Why not make rabbet joints instead?
In my opinion a spline joint, as shown in this video, is stronger than a rabbet joint. Lots more glue surface and the mechanical advantage of the spline.
great video sir. was looking for a way to stop the "wobble dance" when using my extractor. this helps greatly
Thank you so much that I got a good lesson on how to build the board.
This old house meets Bob Ross
Great ideas that are not hard to do or modify.
This video makes me feel like I am back in high school. The step by step instructions give me the feeling of confidence needed to attempt a project like this. I am sure I am not the only one who will become a bee keeper because of these two videos.
I have a question, in this video at the time stamp of 13:50 you noted that the measurement across the back was 15"-3/4. Is that right?
I have reviewed this video but cannot find the comment you referenced. However, the side boards of a hive body are 14-3/4" for a 10 frame hive body. Once assembled, the ends will be 16-1/4" (again for a 10 frame hive body). Hive bodies for 8-frame and 5-frame are different, as shown in the downloadable plans. Thanks for the question.
i like your channel. WOndering about the smell of the sodering grease ( i dont know the name) could it deter queen acceptance? how do you clean it? great ideas. Im a beekeper from Argentina, ive traditionaly made queen via blind nucs at late summer. We have relative "gentle" winter (if there's such a thing, lowest temp is -5°C less than 15 days a year). This is mas fathers career and i want to improve the queen rearing system such that we start replacing all 3yo queens, making 33% of new queens is going to be a challenge, but achievable i think.
I have never seen any adverse reaction to the solder or the flux. If you are concerned, I would simple wash the finished item in hot soapy water.
Very formative
Can you please make some more videos I love your videos very instructional I love them so much please please please make more videos on beekeeping equipment I love them and God bless you sir you are a gift to all the beginners thank the Lord for you. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸✝️✝️✝️
That looks like a good way to make nuc boxes without making all of the fingers. Thanks
🙏
You do a great job!
